Highlander supports Erskine, a charity dedicated to providing nursing and medical care for former members of our Armed Forces through two world wars and the more recent conflicts and peace keeping initiatives of the twentieth and twenty first centuries.
Highlander carries an extensive range of military products, everything from boots and socks, rucksack and other load carrying equipment right through to small accessories like replacement water bottles and camo cream. Holding high levels of stock in the UK has allowed the company to meet rush orders from organizations world wide quickly and with the minimum of fuss.
This expertise and experience has also allowed Highlander to custom manufacture everything from holdalls for emergency services, to boots for security services around the world.
Highlander's best known range is the Forces rucksacks. Designed with comfort, durability, reliability, functionality and versatility in mind. This sturdy rucksack with an airflow back system and improved weight distribution has proven it's self time and time again to the people who use it. This has helped to keep the Forces bag as one of the most popular amongst the armed services and cadets.
Although Highlander has always carried a range of packs for operational use, they have now expanded the range of improved versions of issue bags to include the Tomahawk Patrol Pack. Designed to meet the changing demands from serving military by providing a comfortable, yet hard wearing bag that integrates the flexibility of adding either our own Multi Load Carry System or MOLLE style pouches.
Highlander also carries its own complete ranges of PLCE compatible pouches and webbing and has recently added its new MLCS range, which is compatible with most MOLLE vests and equipment. This supplements their wide range of vests, each tailored for use in different operational environments.
Highlander's footwear has always been a mainstay of its range, with 17 dedicated military styles available in a wide variety of specifications and a broad range of sizes. The Pro Desert Boots have proven consistently popular since their launch, with hundreds of pairs heading out to the Gulf every year, while the Sympatex ATF Boot has proved incredibly popular during the colder periods.
Founded in 1986 by Allan Blacklock and Baram Golzari, Highlander was formed with the goal of making walking and camping equipment available to everyone. During the 80's, only high end specialist equipment was available and the costs were well above what the average person could afford. There was good equipment available at the right price if you knew where to look, and Baram and Allan became experts at tracking down quality equipment. One of their specialities was sourcing good quality ex military issue kit that could be repurposed to the outdoor market.
Soon though, repurposed equipment wasn't good enough for them and they started working with a range of specialist manufacturers to improve upon the sturdy designs used by the military, increasing comfort and functionality without sacrificing the durability or quality. Those design innovations flowed both ways, and quickly Highlander started making its own improved versions of the issue equipment. These proved incredibly popular with both cadets and serving military personnel.
Since then, Highlander has gone from strength to strength, expanding its base of specialist manufacturers and incorporating innovations and technical developments from both the military and outdoor fields into its equipment.
By 2005 their existing premises in Edinburgh was starting to burst at the seams with stock, so Highlander bought a new high bay distribution warehouse in Livingston, West Lothian. The 5 Acre site provided 80,000ft² of combined office and warehouse space for their expanding staff and product range. They also upgraded to the latest wire guided product handling and order processing machinery to manage larger volume orders more efficiently.
In 2007 Highlander received it's ISO 9001-2001 certification to allow it to respond to increased interest from the M.O.D. and other government agencies. This certification has only been achieved by about 5% of UK businesses and this prestigious award is supported by the government and recognized world wide. QMS Quality Management Systems, who undertook the assessment, paid particular tribute to the thorough processes and procedures already in place to provide an efficient service to their customers and allowing them to achieve the certification so quickly.
Highlander has 1200 stockists across the UK, Ireland and Europe and already deals directly with PRI shops in bases across the UK. See the stockist sections of our website for more information.
